SUMMARY:ON THE BRINK Reading Series: Citizen by Claudia Rankine
DESCRIPTION:Spring 2021 ON THE BRINK Reading Series\nCurated by Professor S
affron Henke\n\nWhat have we learned from 2020? How do we as theatre artis
ts respond to this moment?\n\nThese are multifaceted times we are facing\,
not just in terms of the political\, social and cultural upheavals that 2
020 brought upon us\, but also the challenges the pandemic has brought to
live performance as well. In response\, this Spring\, the Colorado State U
niversity Theatre Department will begin a series of readings of new works
addressing the hot topic themes of our times – issues that have pushed o
ur culture to the brink...and that reveal whole new worlds of possibilitie
 s. A collaboration of professional theatre artists\, faculty members\, cur
rent students and CSU alumni\, On the Brink will explore works representin
g a variety of underrepresented voices and perspectives.\n\nCitizen by Cla
 udia Rankine\n\n7:30pm-9:00pm Reading\n9:00pm Facilitated post-reading dis
cussion\nDirector: Aisha Kabia\nPost Show Discussion Facilitator: Fleurett
 e King\n\nClaudia Rankine's bold new book is CSU’s Common Read for 2020-
 21. Citizen recounts mounting racial aggressions in ongoing encounters in
twenty-first-century daily life and in the media. Some of these encounters
are slights\, seeming slips of the tongue\, and some are intentional offe
nsives in the classroom\, at the supermarket\, at home\, on the tennis cou
rt with Serena Williams and the soccer field with Zinedine Zidane\, online
\, on TV-everywhere\, all the time. The accumulative stresses come to bear
on people of color’s ability to speak\, perform\, and stay alive. Our a
ddressability is tied to the state of our belonging\, Rankine argues\, as
are our assumptions and expectations of citizenship. In essay\, image\, an
d poetry\, Citizen is a powerful testament to the individual and collect
ive effects of racism in America.\n\nReading Link Here\n\nDirector and gue
