Oh What a Lovely War by Joan Littlewood

Directed by Eric Prince

December 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 8 p.m., and December 6, 2 p.m.

Oh What A Lovely War chronicles the First World War, told through the songs and documents of the time – a musical like no other, reminding us of history that should never be forgotten.  First performed by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, London, in 1963, it received the acclaim of London audiences and critics, winning the Grand Prix of the Theatre des Nations Festival in Paris that year. Now considered a classic of the modern theatre, the play presents tragic events of world importance without nostalgia or bitterness, yet with pathos, humor, and lovingly authentic detail.

Director Eric Prince, designer Price Johnson, music director Bruce Burbank, and choreographer Scott Wright collaborate on this immense project featuring stunning photos, archive images, iconic recruitment propaganda, and music, songs and dances from the time of the Great War of 1914-18. In preparation for the production, the director visited the Theatre Royal, explored their archives, and met an original cast member.
