Two arts leadership and administration classes from the LEAP Institute for the Arts at Colorado State University have teamed up with the NoCo Mini Maker Faire to create a Nerdy Derby event on Saturday, Oct. 4, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. at the Rocky Mountain Center for Innovation and Technology, 815 14th St. SW, Loveland, Colo.
The Nerdy Derby is based on the Pinewood Derby of the Boy Scouts, but in this case, cars are created by participants young and old using the materials on site. Students from CSU are working in teams to create a budget, acquire materials, market the event on campus, and train their peers to facilitate the derby during the faire. The track will be built by the CSU chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
With a mission to open possibilities for career and life through visionary leadership, creative entrepreneurship, impassioned advocacy and public engagement, this particular planning project embodies all four LEAP guiding principles.
According to Professor Katie Rothstein, “With this partnership, the LEAP Institute will provide its undergraduate students with valuable project management and facilitation experience which they can apply to other projects, and in their LEAP classes.”
The NoCo Mini Maker Faire is described as the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement.
One and two-day tickets to the Faire are available at the door and through EventBrite for $7, $12/youth and $10, 18/adults.
Degree programs in Arts Leadership and Administration, offered by the LEAP Institute for the Arts (Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Arts Advocacy and the Public), in association with the College of Business provide professional resources and training to help Creatives become more marketable. A full-fledged internship program garners real-world experience, while students explore career opportunities in the creative sector, non-profit organizations, and beyond.
